Two Generations, Two Different Builds
The DualSense (PS5) and DualShock 4 (PS4) may look similar from the outside, but under the hood they're quite different — and that affects what mods are possible and how they perform.
Form Factor & Ergonomics
DualSense (PS5)
DualShock 4 (PS4)
For mods: The DualSense's larger body gives us more room for internal modifications like back buttons and additional circuitry. The DualShock 4 is tighter but still fully moddable.
Trigger Differences
This is the biggest difference for modders:
DualSense Adaptive Triggers
The PS5's adaptive triggers have a motor inside that creates dynamic resistance. When we install smart triggers or hair triggers, we can either:
DualShock 4 Standard Triggers
Simple analog triggers — easier to mod, more predictable response. Hair triggers on PS4 are cleaner and more consistent.
Our take: For pure competitive FPS, PS4 hair triggers feel slightly better. For the best overall experience, PS5 adaptive triggers with smart stops are incredible.
Shell & Button Customization
Both controllers support full shell replacement and button swaps, but:
Back Buttons/Paddles
Both support rear button mods, but installation differs:
